An animal shaped opium weight consists of two parts:
The base, which can be round, oval, pumpkin shaped, square, rectangular, hexagonal or octagonal, and the carefully modelled sculpture of an animal, mounted on the base, see the picture below.

A lot of weights bear stamp marks, signs or seals on the fronts, on the side often on the back in front, especially the older weights but seldom do they bear seals on the bottom of the base.
